Townsend Mews, Stevenage
Townsend Mews is a live remediation scheme across four residential blocks in Stevenage, with a combined project value of £12.7 million. Cladding Remediation Limited was the RTM's first appointment on the scheme, taking on the following scope from the outset: Project Management, Employer's Agent, Cost Consultancy and Clerk of Works, across all four blocks.
Our team have carried this project from initial appointment through to construction, with no gaps in accountability.
Four blocks, one programme, moving as one.
Townsend Mews was built as a timber-frame structure, with combustible timber cladding applied across all four blocks. The cavity barriers installed were missing in places and, where present, were not under compression. This meant that the buildings could not demonstrate the fire safety performance required by law.
The scale of the challenge went beyond any single block. As the four blocks are interlinked, work on one affects access, safety and logistics for the others. As this is a live site, residents remain in occupation throughout, so every phase of work has had to be carefully sequenced to protect their safety and minimise disruption, rather than treated as four separate, independent projects.
The challenge
As the RTM's first point of contact, CRL was appointed to lead the project from the start. This appointment covers:
Project Management: coordinating the programme across all four blocks.
Employer's Agent: managing the contract on behalf of the RTM.
Cost Consultancy: overseeing budgets and reporting on project value.
Clerk of Works: on-site quality monitoring throughout construction.
Holding all four roles under our team has meant that our client (the building's RTM company) has never had to manage multiple contractors or reconcile conflicting reports. They have a consistent point of contact with clear accountability across their £12.7 million scheme.
our role
The result
Delivery is running well ahead of programme. Against an initial estimate of 36 to 42 months from inception to completion, the scheme is on track to deliver in under 21 months for the first block to reach completion. This is a substantial improvement on the original timeline, achieved without compromising the careful, phased approach the live site demands.
Below is where each block currently stands.

Project value: £4.25 million.
Mid-rise residential development (11–18m), CSS-funded.
The first of the four blocks to reach site, works commenced in Q1 2026. Forecast completion Q3 2027.
BLOCK D
Project value: £2.45 million.
Mid-rise residential development (11–18m), CSS-funded.
On site since Q1 2026, running in parallel with Block C. Forecast completion Q2 2027.
BLOCK C
